In the First Place, a Thought

I happened upon a small piece of wisdom the other day. Someone told me that if you never stop to smell the roses you will never know they were there. Roses can be a great experience or they can be a distraction. I think what he was trying to say to me was that it's up to me whether I will be distracted.

Distractions eat into our time. Time is the most precious thing we have. You don't know how much you have in advance and you can never retrieve any time you have ued. So be careful about the distractions. They can really steal time away from you.

A good distraction might be a simple Web directory with a lot of listings. Maybe you'll sit there and click on links all day long. I know I have done that.

Another type of distraction might be a video site like Hulu or YouTube. I have spent entire afternoons watching old TV shows and listening to music videos.

I can't say I would like every site I come across but I have been distracted by some of the dumbest Websites. We just seem to have a fascination with the really crazy stuff other people like to do with their lives.

Distractions are not simple things. Someone else once said to me that we get distracted for a reason. Maybe we're thinking too hard or maybe we're not thinking hard enough. Becoming distracted may be the mind's way of resetting itself so that you can tackle an important problem with a fresh perspective.

I just wish it didn't take so long to do the reset, but sometimes it's a lot of fun.
